A 64-year-old woman of Arima has been granted $400,000 bail after appearing in court charged with importing four firearms and a quantity of ammunition, found hidden in a cargo barrel addressed to her.
Sandra Wright, of La Horquetta, Arima, was granted bail by Magistrate Indar Jagroo after she appeared virtually before him charged under the Customs Act with importing firearms and ammunition without a licence.
Wright was not called upon to plead to the charge which was laid indictably.
As part of the conditions of her bail, Jagroo ordered that she report to the La Horquetta Police Station twice weekly for the duration of her case.
Wright was arrested by police after a Customs and Excise officer found the illegal items during a routine search at the Port of Port-of-Spain on Monday.
According to a release from the Police Service, the barrel was found to contain a suspicious sealed bucket when it was electronically scanned.
The four pistols, several magazines and 52 rounds of assorted ammunition, that were wrapped in a plastic bag, were then found submerged in black sticky substance in the bucket.
“Documents retained by the Customs investigator revealed the name and address of a person from the United States as the sender,” the release stated.
Wright, who was represented by Josiah Soo Hon, is expected to reappear in court next month.
