Several hours of rain caused flash flooding in Barrackpore, disrupting a pipelaying project in Golconda.
In Lower Barrackpore, the rain began at midday and continued into the afternoon.
Nesha Mohammed-Toolsie, who had travelled to Barrackpore to pack hampers for students, said they were trapped by the floods and could not leave the school until the water subsided.
“The rain started around 1 pm and lasted until 3 pm. We had constant rain, and within a short space of time, there was immediate flooding because of collapsed culverts,” Mohammed-Toolsie said.
She added, “The drains are not accommodating the water flow. They need to continue maintaining the drains, especially the ones near the school.”
At Ridgewood Gardens Phase One in Golconda, construction workers laying an eight-inch pipeline to connect to a nearby sewer treatment plant faced setbacks when heavy downpours began washing away sand near the construction site. A backhoe was used to cover an open trench while workers spread gravel in the pouring rain.
At Derrick Road, Debe, residents waded through floodwaters to reach their homes. At Lalbeharry Trace, Debe, Nathaniel Mungal suffered damages when floods entered his home.
Scores of people remained stranded at dusk and tractors were used to take people home.
