A man wanted in the United States for murder and other serious offences was extradited from T&T to the US on Sunday.
A media release from the US Embassy in Port-of-Spain yesterday said that Anthony Regis-Ash, who was wanted in New York for drug-related murder, attempted robbery, and weapons possession, was extradited and now faces a potential life sentence after being charged in New York in September 2022.
The US Embassy said a warrant for his arrest was issued in October 2022, following allegations of two counts of second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and illegal possession of a weapon.
Regis-Ash fled to Trinidad and Tobago in June 2021, months before charges were formally laid.
After a US request for extradition in July 2024, local authorities arrested him in Cunupia on October 9, 2024.
On December 21, 2024, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Reginald Armour signed the Warrant of Removal, paving the way for his extradition.
The Embassy said the operation involved a coordinated effort by several agencies, including the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, the Central Authority, the Customs and Excise Division, and the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago.
US agencies such as the Marshals Service, Diplomatic Security Service, Drug Enforcement Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Department of Justice, New York City Police Department, and Kings County District Attorney’s Office also played key roles.
US Marshals and Special Agents from the Diplomatic Security Service escorted Regis-Ash to the United States, with crucial support from both nations’ law enforcement entities.
“This extradition highlights the strength of the US-Trinidad and Tobago law enforcement partnership,” said US Ambassador to T&T Candace Bond.
“Together, we continue to uphold the rule of law and work towards safer communities.”
