RHONDOR DOWLAT-ROSTANT
A suspected hitman was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer along the Lady Chancellor Hill in St Ann’s on Wednesday night.
Police said the man, identified as Franklyn De Freitas, was shot dead after he and two of his accomplices attempted to shoot the officer as he was jogging.
Details are still sketchy but Guardian Media understands that De Freitas and his accomplices were in a car, licensed PBZ 2192, which pulled alongside the off duty officer while he was jogging along the hill, which is a popular sport for fitness enthusiasts, around 7 pm.
The occupants of the vehicle reportedly shot at the officer, who immediately drew his licensed firearm and returned fire at the suspects.
De Freitas, of Rich Plain, Diego Martin, was hit and died on the scene but the other two suspects abandoned the car and ran away.
Police officers responding to the incident subsequently launched a manhunt and another suspect, who was also shot, was found soon afterwards.
