Prisoners at Tetron Barracks and Staubles Bay in Chaguaramas continued their hunger strike for a second consecutive day yesterday.
Vowing to maintain pressure on prison and police officials in the hope of being transferred back to the Maximum Security Prison (MSP) in Mausica and the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre (ECRC) in Santa Rosa, several inmates, speaking through their attorneys, said they would continue to refuse daily meals.
Well-placed sources told Guardian Media that refurbishment work is ongoing at the Wayne Jackson Building at the MSP. Formerly known as Building 13, it is the facility where high-risk inmates were typically housed.
The sources said the renovations will include enhanced security measures designed to prevent inmates from communicating with people outside the facility. However, there is no timeline yet for the completion of the work.
Prison Commissioner Carlos Corraspe was unreachable for comment yesterday.
Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro said on Monday that the two Chaguaramas facilities meet the standards for lawful detention, adding that prisoners do not have the option of choosing where they are housed.
