Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling for tighter security at Carnival events and in surrounding areas, urging authorities to protect citizens and visitors from crime.
She warned that this year’s celebrations are happening under a State of Emergency due to "the unprecedented, uncontrollable crime and violence wave that has besieged our nation for years." She urged police to "diligently maintain a strong presence at all major Carnival events" to ensure the safety of fete-goers, spectators, and revellers.
Persad-Bissessar also wants increased police patrols in rural towns, boroughs, and regional corporations hosting J’ouvert and other festivities. She called for security reinforcements in residential areas, public beaches, and rivers, warning that these locations remain vulnerable.
She urged state authorities to deploy more lifeguards and security personnel to beaches and river limes, anticipating large crowds over the long weekend. She also warned against neglecting children and the elderly, reminding citizens to keep their dependents and pets "safe, secure, supervised, and well cared for."
Persad-Bissessar encouraged adherence to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s safety tips, such as avoiding excessive jewellery, traveling in groups, carrying minimal cash, and designating a sober driver.
