A Port-of-Spain man was arrested after allegedly making racially offensive and obscene remarks directed at Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Hindu deities.
Guardian Media understands that officers attached to the Criminal Investigations Department’s Special Operations Unit detained the man during an operation conducted on Wednesday afternoon.
The man allegedly made a series of inflammatory comments targeting the Prime Minister and Hindu religious figures, including Lord Hanuman and Mother Lakshmi, in videos circulated on social media.
Sources said the operation was coordinated by Assistant Commissioner of Police Richard Smith and involved officers from the Special Operations Unit.
Up to the time of publication, police had not disclosed whether the man had been charged or remained in custody. Authorities also had not released details regarding any offences being considered.
