A Curepe man who was caught with non-regulation tint on his vehicle, has been granted own bail in the sum of $95,000 by a Master of the High Court, after being charged with two counts of uttering a forged document and two counts of possession of forged documents.
And the Fraud Squad, which works closely alongside the Licensing Division on such investigations, is reminding the public that altering or forging any official document and using such paperwork to gain an advantage, is a criminal offence and will not go unnoticed or unprosecuted.
A release from the Police Service notes that 23-year-old office clerk Kavir Maharaj was charged with the offences when he appeared before Master Shabiki Cazabon, on Monday 4 November 2024.
The Sufficiency Hearing date was set for July 22, 2025,
The accused must report to the St. Joseph Police Station once a month, according to the terms of his bail.
The Police Service release recounts that last Friday (November 1, 2024), Licensing Officers were conducting a roadblock exercise along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the Curepe district. The officers stopped a man driving a Nissan AD Wagon for the offence of driving a vehicle with a non-prescribed tint.
They reportedly asked the driver if he had authorisation from the Licensing Division for his vehicle to be tinted in such a manner, to which he allegedly replied ‘Yes’.
According to police reports, the suspect then allegedly produced two documents in his name—a Ministry of Works and Transport Division Exemption Certificate and a Tint Window Exemption—both purportedly from the Licensing Division.
The documents were accepted as genuine at first. However, on further examination, they were deemed to be fraudulent.
The man and the vehicle were escorted to the Licensing Office in Caroni, and checks confirmed that the documents were indeed fraudulent.
The TTPS reports that the Fraud Squad was contacted and an investigation launched.
As a result of the investigation, PC Khan charged Maharaj with the suspect four offences.
The investigation was spearheaded by W/Snr. Supt. (Ag.) Phillips; coordinated by Supt. Lutchman and ASP (Ag.) Davidson; and supervised by Insp. Francis, Sgt. Toney and Cpl Cummings; and included PCs Khan and Belfast.
