A 49-year-old Chaguanas man was granted $5 million bail after appearing in court charged with trafficking nearly five kilogrammes of cocaine.
High Court Master Whitney Franklin granted bail to Floyd Brathwaite, a self-employed labourer of Railway Road, for the offence, which allegedly occurred on Sunday.
Police stated that four rectangular packages containing a white powdery substance, believed to be cocaine, were found in a car Brathwaite was driving along Balmain Road, Couva. The estimated street value of the drugs is $6.9 million.
According to the state, Brathwaite has a pending charge for possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, laid in 2015, as well as an ongoing money laundering case.
Police opposed bail on the basis of these previous charges.
Brathwaite’s attorneys, Bhimal Maharajh and Kavita Moonasar, argued that their client is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
In granting bail, Franklin ordered that Brathwaite reside at his home until the matter concludes, surrender his passport, and report to the Chaguanas Police Station every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The case has been adjourned to July 24, 2026, for a status hearing, with a sufficiency hearing set for September 8, 2026.
