Man in viral video beating woman arrested and charged

The Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS) is con­firm­ing that a 22-year-old man who was caught on so­cial me­dia beat­ing a woman in the mid­dle of the road, was ar­rest­ed on Sun­day night af­ter the in­ci­dent.

22-year-old Shaquille Sar­jeant will ap­pear be­fore a Ch­agua­nas Mag­is­trate to­mor­row, Tues­day 18th Au­gust 2020, to an­swer to charges laid to­day.

A re­lease from the TTPS states that around 9 pm on Sun­day 16th Au­gust, the Cen­tral Com­mand Cen­tre re­ceived a do­mes­tic vi­o­lence re­port, and con­veyed the in­for­ma­tion to of­fi­cers on mo­bile pa­trol.

WPC Harp­er and PC Fran­cois, at­tached to the Cunu­pia Po­lice Sta­tion, quick­ly made their way to the Hillview Park area.

The TTPS says up­on ar­rival, the of­fi­cers ob­served a young woman in dis­tress in the mid­dle of the road. She was clad in a pink top and pair of blue shorts.

The woman re­port­ed­ly told po­lice of­fi­cers that the fa­ther of her chil­dren had been beat­ing her along the road­way.

Wit­ness­es al­so gave state­ments to the po­lice.  By­standers in­formed the of­fi­cers that the as­sailant was a man wear­ing a light-coloured t-shirt and blue three-quar­ter pants.

Po­lice went in search of the sus­pect and min­utes lat­er, they found him walk­ing along Day Dri­ve, Cunu­pia.

The sus­pect was tak­en to the Cunu­pia Po­lice Sta­tion where he was for­mal­ly charged to­day, Mon­day Au­gust 17th, 2020, by WPC Harp­er.

Ac­cord­ing to po­lice re­ports, the vic­tim, who is a moth­er of two, was re­ferred to the Vic­tim and Wit­ness Sup­port Unit and the Gen­der Based Vi­o­lence Unit of the TTPS.

The TTPS says the chil­dren were hand­ed over to their grand­fa­ther for safe keep­ing.
