One man has been killed in a police-involved shooting. The deceased has been identified only as "Aki".
Guardian Media understands that the man was shot during an Anti-Extortion Unit operation in Chaguanas, where police recovered a 'one-pop' shot gun.
Police say around 4:30 am, officers attached to the Anti-Extortion Unit, while on operational duty in a marked police vehicle, proceeded to a residence along Soogrim Trace off Endeavour Road.
Upon arrival at the location, officers announced their presence and attempted to apprehend the suspect, “Aki”. However, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the approaching officers who returned fire and struck him.
The operation was part of an ongoing investigation into a report of conspiracy to commit murder, with “Aki” identified as a prime suspect.
Police say he was immediately transported to the Chaguanas Health Facility for emergency treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
