A shootout with police ended with the death of one man and the seizure of a gun in Claxton Bay on Saturday afternoon.

Police said officers from the Central Division were on patrol on Dump Road at 4 pm, when they saw two men standing by the side of the road.

One of the men had a pistol tucked into the waistband of his trousers.

When the men saw the police vehicle, they ran into nearby bushes, and the officers pursued them.

As they entered the bushes, officers reported that the men fired at them.

Police returned fire, killing one of the men, identified as Emmanuel Mohammed.

A District Medical Officer declared Mohammed dead at the scene.

Officers found and seized a Pietro Beretta pistol, believed to have been used by Mohammed, along with five rounds of 9-millimetre ammunition.
