For those who can easily buy food amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a call to shop a little more for the less fortunate when you visit the supermarkets.
The Point Fortin Borough Corporation placed barrels at several supermarkets this week, asking people to contribute non-perishable food items.

Point Fortin Mayor Saleema Thomas said these items would go to families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thomas said the Borough Council, through its Social Welfare Service Committee, is asking customers to “Share When You Shop.”
“We are kindly asking people that while they shop in the grocery stores that they contribute essential and non-perishable items to our Community Care Food Bank, and we will distribute to those in need.”
Customers can look out for the red collection drums, with the Point Fortin Borough Corporation logo at Massy Stores, Tang Hap's Supermarket, Persad's Supermarket, More Low, Peipings and M&V 1 Stop-Weekes Mini Mart.
Thomas said this became necessary because many families were adversely affected as COVID-19 forced people to stay at home.

She said the initiative expands the Council's humanitarian drive to assist families in need.
“We believe that we should all be our brother’s keepers by coming together. And seeing other communities doing similar initiatives, the Point Fortin Borough Council decided this was one that we wanted to pursue so that no one gets left behind.”
Thomas said people reached out to her office, councillors, and aldermen, and they assisted through the various government grants.

She said that together with Point Fortin MP Kennedy Richards Jr, they did other initiatives, including hamper distributions. She said there was no limit as they were hoping to reach everyone in need.

The Corporation has a list of those families in need of help.
