A mother and her six-year-old daughter were injured after their car plunged about 200 feet down a precipice near the San Fernando Hill yesterday.
Police said around 4.10 pm, a gold-coloured Nissan Tiida driven by Kahaema Byer, 44, of Palmiste, San Fernando, was heading north down the San Fernando Hill. Her daughter, Isabella, six, was also in the car.
Upon reaching near the Haji Shaffick Rahaman Park, which is a dangerous bend, Byer reportedly lost control of the car. The vehicle subsequently ran off the roadway and plunged approximately 200 feet down a precipice on the western side of the steep slope, landing in some bushes at the bottom.
A 23-year-old female passerby immediately rescued Isabella from the wreckage.
Fire officers from the Mon Repos Station responded and later rescued Kahaema.
Police said Isabella suffered minor bruises to her face and feet and complained of pain in her right arm.
Her mother also complained of pain in her arms and about the body. Both victims were subsequently taken to the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) for medical attention.
Police and crime scene investigators were at the scene during the rescue efforts.
In January 2024, schoolteacher Renée Mitchell died after falling nearly 80 feet off the nearby San Fernando Hill during a fete in what police described as a freak accident.
PCs Ramrattansingh and Williams, of the Mon Repos Police Station, are investigating.
