Member of Parliament for St. Augustine, Khadijah Ameen is appealing to ministries and state agencies to uphold their duty of providing essential services to “at-risk” communities, despite challenges posed by crime.
In a media release today, MP Ameen urged all relevant stakeholders to collaborate effectively to ensure that vital services such as drainage, garbage collection, public utilities and social services continue to reach every citizen.
This appeal was made as MP Ameen today visited the Trainline in Freeman Road, St. Augustine, an area recognized as a crime hotspot.
The MP was accompanied by the drainage division and police officers as they discussed flooding, erosion and other issues affecting the major watercourse flowing through the community.
The MP stated that it is imperative that ministries and state agencies recognize the rights of all citizens to access basic services, regardless of the security situation in their neighborhoods.
” Depriving “at-risk” communities of essential services not only exacerbates existing vulnerabilities but also undermines efforts to address the root causes of crime and social unrest, she said.
She stated that by working together to address both the immediate needs and underlying issues facing “at-risk” communities, we can build a future where every citizen has equal access to the services and support they need to thrive.
