Nigel De Freitas has replaced Christine Kangaloo as Senate President.
De Freitas, was elected unopposed during today's sitting of the Senate.
In announcing the appointment, Leader of Government Business Senator Amery Browne confirmed that de Freitas will no longer hold the post of Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries.
Yesterday, Kangaloo resigned as Senate President ahead of Friday's Electoral College election for President of Trinidad and Tobago.
Kangaloo is the government’s nominee for the post.
Meanwhile, Central businessman Richie Sookhai has been appointed as a Government Senator.
Sookhai, the president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Commerce, would have had to step down to accept the appointment.
