No bail for man charged with sex assault on grandkids, 11, 12

A 62-year-old man was yes­ter­day re­mand­ed in­to cus­tody af­ter ap­pear­ing vir­tu­al­ly be­fore a San Fer­nan­do mag­is­trate, charged with three counts of sex­u­al touch­ing and one count of sex­u­al pen­e­tra­tion against his 11- and 12-year-old grand­daugh­ters re­spec­tive­ly.

In a me­dia re­lease yes­ter­day, the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS) said the ac­cused, who re­sides in San Fer­nan­do, was ar­rest­ed and charged on Thurs­day with the of­fences by WPC Alexan­der, of the South­ern Di­vi­sion Child Pro­tec­tion Unit, who in­ves­ti­gat­ed two re­ports made on April 17, 2023, in­volv­ing the mi­nors.

The man will reap­pear be­fore the court on Oc­to­ber 13, where he is ex­pect­ed to an­swer the charges.

Po­lice said in the first case, an 11-year-old girl told de­tec­tives that dur­ing the pe­ri­od Jan­u­ary 2022 to De­cem­ber 2022, she was in a bed­room when a man whom she knows al­leged­ly squeezed her breast and bot­tom.

She told CPU de­tec­tives that sim­i­lar in­ci­dents hap­pened dur­ing the pe­ri­od Jan­u­ary 1, 2023, to Feb­ru­ary 20, 2023, and again dur­ing April 1, 2023, to April 8, 2023. The TTPS said in the sec­ond case, a 12-year-old girl re­port­ed to CPU de­tec­tives that on a date un­known be­tween Jan­u­ary 2021 and De­cem­ber 2021, a man whom she knows al­so al­leged­ly sex­u­al­ly as­sault­ed her in the bath­room of his home.

Fol­low­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions su­per­vised by Su­per­in­ten­dent Claire Guy-Al­leyne, ag In­sp Ram­phal, Sgt An­drews and Cpl Thomp­son, of the Spe­cial Vic­tims De­part­ment, the sus­pect was charged with the of­fences.

The mat­ters were heard by Mag­is­trate Armi­na De­onar­i­nesingh.
