For the second time this year, parents of students in the Infants Department who attend the St Dominic's RC School in Penal, protested the deplorable conditions of the church, where their children are expected to learn.
The building was condemned after it was damaged in an earthquake in 2017.
Guardian Media understands students in Standards One to Five have been accommodated at the Penal Community Centre, while the Infants Department was relocated to the parish hall of the St Dominic’s RC Church.
Years later, the parents of students in the Infants Department are calling for a new school.
They say they cannot continue to send their children into unsafe conditions.
“There is no security on this compound,” one of the protesting parents told Guardian Media. “Our infant children are here without security.”
“There is no air-conditioning. The air-conditioning has been cut off until further notice,” the parent revealed. “There is a bill that has to be paid and the school is required to pay 80 percent of that bill.”
Back in January, Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly said a request for roof assessment was sent to MTS and once the report is received, the recommendations for repair will be implemented.
Guardian Media contacted the education minister about plans to rebuild the school.
Minister Gadsby-Dolly said the matter will have to be discussed with the Catholic Education Board of Management (CEBM).
