Pastor Bickram Singh of the Community Bible Church says while he is still unclear over the circumstances that led to the killing of one man by police, he is concerned over the incident happening at the Church’s facilities.
Sources have confirmed that officers of the Police Anti-Extortion Unit visited the Church on Persad Avenue, off Mon Plaisir Road, Cunupia, at around 5 am when the shooting happened.
As of 11 am, official details on the shooting were not available, however at least one man is believed to have been killed.
Residents say the man, whose name they did not know, and three other family members rented a room at the Church.
When Guardian Media visited the Church, bloodstains were visible on the entrance, as glass panels on the door were broken.
When contacted for comment, Pastor Singh said he heard of the incident but could not provide any details on what led to the police visit.
Singh confirmed that a room was being rented by a woman and her family.
“Of course it must be unsettling and we as a Church we are traumatised by these events and because of uncertainty it is something very unsettling for us, but we trust in God for information and better outcomes for families in our nation.
“I cannot say what was happening in the tenancy, but the Church remains open, we have not been disallowed from using the facility which is a sanctuary in a separate part of the building so we continue and as soon as we are able to we will meet with our parishioners to do counsellings et cetera.”
Singh said the Church has enjoyed good relations with the Persad Avenue community over the years and received no complaints from parishioners or staff about safety concerns or crime in the neighbourhood.
