Investigators from the Police Complaints Authority visited the Courts Megastore in San Juan yesterday, which was the scene where an off-duty police officer opened fire on five people in the carpark.
The development came as the off-duty officer, according to investigators close to the TTPS probe, was expected to be questioned about the deadly incident.
Meanwhile, a mother of five who was shot in the mayhem remained under police guard at the hospital yesterday.
A close female relative of Kerrey-Ann Moore, said loved ones have been unable to see or speak with her since she was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex shortly after the shooting. In fact, the relative said they were unsure where exactly Moore was warded.
Just after midday on Sunday, Sinanya Lessey, 35, her brother Simeon, 33, his wife Kerrey and family friend Nathan Pierre were shot by an off-duty police officer in the carpark of Courts Megastore. The siblings were killed on the spot, while the others were left nursing gunshot injuries.
Initial reports from the TTPS stated the off-duty police officer opened fire during an attempted robbery. But relatives of the siblings alleged Sinanya went to demand her money back from a man who claimed he could provide her with household appliances and furniture at a discounted price. She reportedly handed over $11,000 to the man. Sinanya had been employed at the House of Angostura, Laventille, for the last ten years.
ASP Daniel Hernandez is spearheading the TTPS investigation, even as the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) and the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) conduct simultaneous investigations.
Guardian Media understands the PCA investigators visited the scene of the shooting at Courts as enquiries got underway.
The PCA has also appealed to witnesses and other members of the public who can assist in the investigation to come forward and meet with them.
But speaking with reporters at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, as she waited with relatives who had come to witness the autopsies of Simeon and Siniaya Lessey, the close relative said the family was still processing the ordeal.
The relative, speaking about Moore, “She good, but we never really got to speak with her.
“From what we heard, she’s doing all right so far. We haven’t been able to see her or drop anything for her.”
The relative said the family did not know exactly where Moore had been shot, as both the hospital and police were tight-lipped on her condition.
The close female relative said Moore’s five children—ages 21, 18, 17, 15 and 11—were looking forward to her being discharged from the hospital and returning home with them. She said while the family’s Christmas plans were overshadowed by the tragic events, relatives were hoping for something good from the situation.
The relative assured, “We doing all right. We trying to hold everything down. We trying to be strong. We know she will come out, she is a strong woman.”
Meanwhile, relatives of the Lessey siblings identified their bodies, but Guardian Media was told the autopsies would be done tomorrow.
