Prime Minister Stuart Young is giving assurances of job safety for workers at the state-run Water and Sewage Authority, as well as those employed with the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission.

During a public meeting in St James on Wednesday night, PM Young dismissed claims by the UNC that there are plans to privatise those organisations and reduce staff.

“That Cabinet Sub-Committee Report [they’re] referring to … was rejected by the Cabinet,” he asserted. “A committee puts forward a report. A committee makes recommendations.”

“Our position, workers of WASA and workers of T&TEC, is that we are not getting rid of WASA and T&TEC,” PM Young stated. “And we are not privatising [them] … And we are not looking to get rid of workers.”

The Prime Minister said the restructuring taking place at WASA was aimed only at upper management.
