Adam Nicholas Hosein, a candidate for the People’s National Movement in Caroni Central, has issued a formal apology to the Parish of St. Philip and St. James RC Church in Chaguanas after participating in the Church’s Good Friday Procession without prior approval, and subsequently sharing footage of the event as part of his political campaign.
In a letter dated April 19, 2025, addressed to Father Steve Ransome, Hosein expressed his “heartfelt apologies” to the Church’s leadership and the wider Catholic and Christian community. He acknowledged that he had participated in the deeply spiritual procession for the first time and was moved by the devotion and unity he witnessed. However, he admitted to capturing and sharing footage of the event without seeking prior permission.
“I did so without seeking prior permission, and for that, I am truly sorry,” Hosein wrote. “Please know that it was never my intention to cause offence, to politicize the occasion, or to imply any affiliation between the Parish Church and the People’s National Movement.”
The apology follows an incident in which Hosein attended the Good Friday Procession with a videographer, despite being advised against doing so by Fr. Ransome. The Church had been informed beforehand that Hosein was neither a parishioner nor a Catholic and had never previously attended the event. Fr. Ransome had clearly stated his preference for the procession to remain apolitical and reverent.
Footage of Hosein at the event was later circulated via social media as part of his political outreach, drawing concern from Church leadership. The video was brought to Fr. Ransome’s attention on Glorious Saturday, prompting immediate outreach to the candidate’s team demanding the content be removed and a public apology be issued.
The Church has since confirmed that the video was removed and Hosein’s apology was received on Easter Sunday.
In a statement to parishioners, St. Philip and St. James RC Church said, “We hope that this incident did not distract you, dear Parishioner, from the holy celebration of the Easter weekend. As always, we remain committed to preserving the sanctity and reverence of our sacred traditions.”
