The People’s National Movement (PNM) is condemning the actions of the Progressive Empowerment Party’s (PEP) leader Phillip Alexander who they claim attempted to force a confrontation with a PNM candidate while campaigning on Saturday.

In a statement, the PNM said Alexander hosted a live video where he was aggressively shouting and loudly knocking on the campaign office for the PNM candidate for New Village in Point Fortin Leslie Pascall.

“We reject the bullying belligerence, and we reject that pathetic attempt by you and your handful of supporters to drag Point Fortin to those low levels. The party’s executive wants these mocking pretenders to know that Point is Love and we will not allow these annoyances to attack our sensibilities. The executive sincerely hopes that the Ethics Council is ‘monitoring’ these acts of aggression and will condemn same with alacrity,” the release stated.

When Guardian Media reached out to Alexander for comment, he acknowledged that he did knock on the candidate’s door but denied banging. He accused the PNM of hijacking elections by creating distractions.

“This election has been hijacked by political stunts that have nothing to do with the Local Government Elections or local government issues and the PEP is having none of that … I’d like to add that the PNM that has been brought before the Political Ethics Council on multiple occasions in this election are the last ones to guide on proper behaviour,” Alexander said.
