Homicide investigators are hoping autopsy results on the body of Shameia Went today will determine the course of investigations into her death.
Went, 22, of Johnstone, Street, San Fernando, was pronounced dead at the San Fernando General Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department on Sunday.
A police report stated that a driver dropped her off around 2.08 am on Sunday, returned to his vehicle and sped off without leaving any information. Went, who was unconscious and had several marks of violence on her body, also did not have any identification documents on her. Doctors at the hospital attempted to resuscitate her, but they were unsuccessful.
While relatives suspect that an ex-lover beat Went to death, investigators said they must get a forensic pathologist to determine a cause of death before they can determine a possible motive. If a beating caused her death, they can investigate and speak to the person her family suspects in her killing.
Relatives told Guardian Media that Went previously stayed at a safe house to escape a man who they described as a narcissistic ex-lover, but left and reconciled with him on Friday. Now, after her death, they claimed the man is on the run.
Went’s mother, Sharon, said that her daughter began a secret relationship with the man.
After her family discovered the relationship, Went moved out of her home to live with him in La Romain. Within two months of living with the man, the abuse began.
Sharon said Went would call for help, but when relatives went with the police, she would tell them the matter was sorted out and refuse to press charges.
