The prison of­fi­cer ar­rest­ed on Wednes­day on al­le­ga­tions of be­ing in pos­ses­sion of con­tra­band items at the prison has been iden­ti­fied as Stariel Charles.

His name was re­leased by the Po­lice Ser­vice yes­ter­day in a news re­lease.

The re­lease said Charles, 37, faces charges for pos­ses­sion of mar­i­jua­na and pos­ses­sion of pro­hib­it­ed ar­ti­cles.

He was ex­pect­ed to ap­pear vir­tu­al­ly be­fore the Port-of-Spain mag­is­trate yes­ter­day.

Charles is the fourth prison of­fi­cer ar­rest­ed dur­ing the past four weeks on sim­i­lar al­le­ga­tions of at­tempt­ing to smug­gle con­tra­band in­to the prison sys­tem.

The po­lice re­lease said Charles was ar­rest­ed on Wednes­day by of­fi­cers at­tached to the Port- of- Spain Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions De­part­ment (CID), in ac­cor­dance with the Mis­cel­la­neous Pro­vi­sions (law en­force­ment

of­fi­cers) Act No.25 of 2019, af­ter be­ing re­port­ed­ly found in pos­ses­sion of the pro­hib­it­ed items.

Po­lice re­port­ed­ly searched his home on Thurs­day and al­leged­ly found items such as wrap­ping pa­per and what

is com­mon­ly re­ferred to as ‘hemp cig­a­rettes’.

As­sis­tance from Cus­toms and Ex­cise was sought rel­a­tive to the items found.
