The prison officer arrested on Wednesday on allegations of being in possession of contraband items at the prison has been identified as Stariel Charles.
His name was released by the Police Service yesterday in a news release.
The release said Charles, 37, faces charges for possession of marijuana and possession of prohibited articles.
He was expected to appear virtually before the Port-of-Spain magistrate yesterday.
Charles is the fourth prison officer arrested during the past four weeks on similar allegations of attempting to smuggle contraband into the prison system.
The police release said Charles was arrested on Wednesday by officers attached to the Port- of- Spain Criminal Investigations Department (CID), in accordance with the Miscellaneous Provisions (law enforcement
officers) Act No.25 of 2019, after being reportedly found in possession of the prohibited items.
Police reportedly searched his home on Thursday and allegedly found items such as wrapping paper and what
is commonly referred to as ‘hemp cigarettes’.
Assistance from Customs and Excise was sought relative to the items found.
