The brother of a police officer was killed and another injured during a robbery at a bar in Gasparillo on Monday night just as it was about to be closed.
He has been identified as Kristian Sirjusingh, 28, of 229 Happy Hill, Bonne Aventure. He was a law clerk employed at Richard Sirjoo law firm in Chaguanas.
In an immediate response Sirjoo took to his Facebook page and wrote that he is in shock and disbelief.
The injured person is said to be 28 years and also from Bonne Aventure.
The incident occurred at about 8.30 pm at Michelle's Bar.
Police said the bar tender who is a Dominican national when three men walked in and one if them ordered a beer. The bar tender sold it to him and then he asked if the gambling machines were working. That was when the bar tender said it weren't working and that the bar was now closed.
The suspect then pulled out a gun and announced a hold up. Several patrons of the bar who were liming outside the bar and inside were then robbed of cash, jewellery, cell phones and other valuables.
As the men were leaving the compound the armed man opened fire in the direction of Sirjusingh and the other victim. Sirjusingh died on the scene.
Police said a 24-year-old Venezuelan national bartender and the 59-year-old proprietor was also present during the robbery.
A team of police officers responded and the wounded man, who was shot in the right hand was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated and warded in a stable condition.
Sirjusingh's body was viewed by the District Medical Officer and removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday.
Police recovered four 9mm spent shells on the scene.
