A poultry worker is expected to be sentenced on October 30 for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl when he was a teenager.
Justice Kathy Ann Waterman-Latchoo on Thursday found the accused guilty of two charges of grievous sexual assault and one count of attempted murder, following a judge-alone trial.
The accused was 16 years old when he committed the sex crimes and was related to the girl’s stepfather. He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution’s evidence, led by State attorneys Dylan Martin and Niara Boodan, was that sometime during the period July 31 and September 1, 2010, the little girl was showering in an outdoor bathroom at her Central home.
The accused walked into the bathroom with just a towel around his waist. The girl then took off the shower and wrapped herself with her towel, but as she stepped out, the accused grabbed her hand and pulled her towards him. He then assaulted her and told her not to tell anyone.
The other offences took place on September 15, 2010. She was in the toilet when he walked in and closed the door. He again sexually assaulted her and then attempted to sodomise her.
The next day, the child confided in the guidance counsellor at her school and police officers were contacted. Six days later, the accused was arrested and charged with the offences. He testified at the trial in his defence but had denied all the allegations. —Sascha Wilson
