Colour, music and solidarity were on display yesterday as scores gathered to participate in the annual pride parade.
This year the parade took place along Maraval Road, Port-of-Spain and saw people raising rainbow flags and dressed in rainbow attire in almost a Carnival like atmosphere.
Aside from the parade, there was also a Pride Market with several items on display.
Under the theme “The Right to”, Director of Pride TT, Tracy Sheppard, advocated for acceptance and self-expression. Sheppard highlighted the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community. Sheppard also recognised and praised all stakeholders for ensuring events throughout the month were a success.
“As we march today let us remember our theme, the right to, the right to be, the right to love, the right to liberty. Each step we take along the roadway today it is going to be a testament to our resilience, our unity and our commitment to equality. We promise to keep momentum going,” she said.
Sheppard said members of the community will continue to advocate for inclusion.
“This theme resonates deeply with each of us, representing our unwavering commitment to freedom, love and the liberty to live our authentic lives.” Yesterday’s parade transformed the landscape into a vibrant tapestry of rainbow flags and spirited participants. Pride TT hosted Trinidad and Tobago’s first pride parade in Port-of-Spain in 2018. Throughout the month, community members engage in several celebratory activities and advocacy for equal justice. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS.
