PrideTT, the local LGBTQIA+ organisation responsible for T&T’s annual Pride celebrations has launched its calendar of events from 24 June to 24 July 2022 in commemoration of Pride Month in T&T.
While June is known as international Pride Month, the occasion has been commemorated for the past five years in Trinidad and Tobago during the period between the end of June to the end of July.
Organisers of the month-long event have used this period to amplify and recognise the history, vitality, contributions and presence of the LGBTQIA+ community in T&T.
This year will mark the organisation’s and the country’s 5th Anniversary of public Pride celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago catered specifically to the local LGBTQIA+ community and their allies.
The 2022 theme is "rejuveNATION.”
The organization sees this as a catalyst for bringing together Pride in nation and community as it coincides with the 60th Anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence and seeks to recognize LGBT+ citizens’ contributions toward national development.
Under this theme, PrideTT aims to inspire recovery of both community and country in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pride TT Calendar 2022
“The world has been through a rough period and Trinidad and Tobago is no exception, in our programming we are celebrating our love for country while taking up space as LGBT+ citizens in our nation” says PrideTT’s co-Director Josh Ryan.
“This is a time for healing of community, restoration of ourselves and our culture and a reminder to our nation and leaders that we are here and we matter.”
The 5th Anniversary festival is full of exciting activities geared towards building community and celebrating the beauty of Trinidad and Tobago and our diversity.
T&T Pride events will feature a mixture of live and hybrid events such as a concert and stage shows, parties, drag shows, a health & education fair, a Pride film festival, a Pride-themed art exhibition, other educational forums and much more.
The month-long calendar of events would culminate with the return of the LGBTQ+ Pride Fair and Parade which was disrupted in the past two years because of the pandemic.
PrideTT is a registered non-profit organisation in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Yannick Gibson, the organization’s new creative director, has said “The programming this year is really a testament to how far we’ve come as a community; that LGBT+ citizens can reconcile their national heritage with their identity as queer individuals, and be able to celebrate; everything is moving in the right direction. The road ahead is still long but we see change on the horizon.”
