Five of the six prisoners who were recaptured after allegedly breaking free from the Remand Section of the Golden Grove State Prison, last Wednesday, have been returned to prison custody.
Steffon Austin, Joshua Janet, Mikhale Mohammed, Brent Johnson and Atiba Sealy were remanded in custody when they appeared before Magistrate Cheron Raphael in the Arima Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with escaping lawful custody.
All five men pleaded not guilty to the charge and were ordered to reappear in court, next month.
Police took no chances for the group’s court appearance with armed officers taking up strategic locations around the building in anticipation for their arrival. The men were eventually brought, in batches of two, between 10 am and 11 am but made their appearances before Raphael around 1 pm.
Guardian Media understands that although Kerry Valentino was arrested alongside his former cell-mates, last week, he could not be brought to court for the hearing as he was still receiving medical attention for minor injuries, he complained of upon his arrest. Valentino is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
In an interview with Guardian Media, last week, Prison Commissioner Gerard Wilson said that the men would be secured at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, after their court appearances.
According to reports, sometime between last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the men escaped through a small hole in the wall of their cell in the south wing of the remand facility.
Investigators believe that the men used a hacksaw to cut through bars and then removed two ventilation blocks.
Hours after the escape, Austin, Janet, Mohammed, Johnson and Valentino, who were all on remand for different murders, were arrested near Rock Park Hotel in St Helena.
Sealy was arrested the following day while walking along El Carmen Road in St Helena.
Sealy was one of three men who were charged for the armed robbery of five employees and a patron of Island Beer Chill and Grill in South Park, San Fernando, in January.
Investigators were still searching for Michael Findley, of Laventille, and Olatungi Denbow, of Port-of-Spain, up to late yesterday.
A $50,000 reward has been offered for information on the whereabouts of the two men, who are among five men charged with the double murder of two construction workers in 2016 and several other serious criminal offences.
