A quar­ry su­per­vi­sor, on his way home from work, was killed on Tues­day evening as he left the Stollmey­er Quar­ry in San­ta Cruz.

The rapid gun­fire sent near­by res­i­dents div­ing for cov­er.
Po­lice said Saas­tri Gopaul was shot sev­er­al times around 2.30 pm at Can­gre­jal Road.

He was em­ployed with Seereer­am Broth­ers Ltd.

The vic­tim was dri­ving a com­pa­ny van when it was blocked by a car parked a short dis­tance away from the com­pa­ny’s guard booth.

Po­lice said two gun­men got out from the wait­ing Nis­san Ti­i­da and be­gan shoot­ing at Gopaul, caus­ing the truck to run off the road.

When Guardian Me­dia vis­it­ed the scene around 4.30 pm, the vic­tim’s fam­i­ly and co-work­ers were there. Tears flowed as un­der­tak­ers re­moved his body min­utes lat­er.

One res­i­dent de­scribed the crime sit­u­a­tion as bad and out of con­trol, say­ing the area was no stranger to such oc­cur­rences.

He said, “It had one last year…is like we get­ting one per year now.”

Say­ing that Can­gre­jal meant crab, the el­der­ly man added,

“The young peo­ple in their 19s, 20s…they evil and they need to go back to God.”

Gopaul’s co-work­ers de­clined to com­ment when ap­proached.
