A surge of violence gripped the country over the last twenty-four hours in which Venezuelan nationals were both perpetrators and victims of crime.
Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith during a police briefing yesterday said consideration should be given to deporting Venezuelans they are found to be involved in criminal activity, even if they have been granted amnesty to stay in this country for a year.
Griffith’s call came in the midst of a bloody Friday, in which two Venezuelan nationals were killed by police, while four others were rescued by police after they were kidnapped and raped.
Early yesterday, police shot and killed four men in Central Trinidad at Torrington Road, Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas.
Among the dead men were two Venezuelan nationals one identified as Ronniel Lara while the other man identified only as “Freddie, up to press time.
The Venezuelans were killed together with 29-year-old Richard Wilson from Chaguanas and 22-year-old Demell Howell from Maloney.
And just before midday, officers of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT) together with officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS) and officers of the Western Division stormed a house at Union Drive, Four Roads, Diego Martin and rescued four Venezuelan women all in their mid-20s who was being held captive there.
Senior sources involved in the operation told Guardian Media that two women were searching for an apartment to rent in the Four Roads area on Thursday morning.
They were referred to a particular house where men who police say were posing as fake cops kidnapped them and took them to a house painted in blue and white resembling a police station at Union Drive.
The metal gates had a replica of the Star of David, an official symbol of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.
Apart from the two women who had been reported missing the day before, police also rescued two other Venezuelan women who were being held captive in the house. Senior sources say they were able to locate the house based on intelligence supplied by SORT officers.
Three suspects in their mid-twenties were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, robbery and sexually assaulting the women.
The operation was conducted with the help of ACP Irwin Hackshaw, of the Western Division, Inspector Vincent of the Four Roads Police Station and Sgt Mark Hernandez of SORT.
On Thursday, 36-year-old Venezuelan national Jose Rodriguez was shot and killed by a lone gunman while driving along the Western Main Road on near Highland Plaza, Glencoe.
On April 4 another unidentified Venezuelan national identified as Alexander Cedeno Roroba was shot and killed outside the El Pecos Grill at the corner of Ariapita Avenue and De Verteuil Street, Woodbrook.
The man they say was an asylum seeker, but sources yesterday told Guardian Media he worked as a hitman in Venezuela.
