The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has downgraded the Riverine Flood Alert covering communities surrounding major and minor rivers and their tributaries, from ORANGE to YELLOW Level, and will be in effect until midday on Thursday.
According to the latest Met Service advisory:
“Most river levels across Trinidad have decreased to below their banks and run-off is steady. However, some impacted communities are still at low to moderate risk of adverse impact.”
The Met Service warns that floodwaters run-off will be slower at high tide, which will be at 9:45 pm tonight (Wednesday 30 November 2022), and tomorrow morning at 10:55 am (Thursday 1 December 2022).
An advisory issued by the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government notes that at 9:30 this morning, the Caroni River—in the vicinity of Bamboo Settlement—was at 76 percent capacity, with an alert status at ORANGE Level.
The Ministry’s advisory noted that in the El Carmen area, the Caroni River was at 49 percent capacity, with an alert status at GREEN Level.
Several other rivers which had been a cause for concern are now at BLUE Level status: the North Oropouche River in the vicinity of Toco Road registered 34 percent capacity; the Caparo River was at 18 percent; the Arouca River at 27 percent; and the Aripo River at 16 percent.
The Met Service is urging members of the public to continue monitoring weather conditions and river levels before venturing out, and to avoid areas with flood waters.
“Monitor updates from official sources and plan safety measures, including emergency supplies of food and water,” the advisory urges, “and follow the instructions of government officials.”
