Steps have been taken to boost safety measures at the intersection of Macoya Road and the Priority Bus Route in Tunapuna, after a recent spate of accidents. The move followed an assurance of improvements by Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan less than a week ago, during a site visit on the basis of the concerns raised about vehicular collisions.
Yesterday morning, workmen installed additional signage at the intersection and repainted pavement markings.
Traffic signal bulbs were changed to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for better illumination.
Sinanan had previously stated that the ministry would conduct several exercises to augment existing safety features, including the placement of additional traffic control devices, informative and regulatory signage and rumble strips, a feature that alerts drivers by sending a tactile vibration and rumbling sound through the vehicle.
While touring the area recently, Sinanan rubbished claims that the increase in accidents, some of which have been captured and shared on social media, was the result of the intersection being ‘blight’, saying instead they were primarily a result of human error.
