More than 200 police officers and members of the Defence Force will be in San Fernando this Saturday for the highly anticipated J’Ouvert and Pan and Powder events.
They are part of the City Month activities under the theme, Now You Know Sando, which are being held by the San Fernando City Corporation in celebration of its 36-year city status.
Speaking at the press conference at the Mayor’s Box in Skinner Park yesterday, San Fernando Mayor Robert Parris said, “I will expect a safe, clean, fun environment in San Fernando where it is that we bask in revelry and we celebrate 36 years sensibly in the City of San Fernando.”
Public relations officer Wendy H Lewis also assured that they have “zero issues where security is concerned,” so they anticipate a safe J’Ouvert and Pan and Powder experience.
Tourism Minister Randall Mitchell and PanTrinbago chairman Beverly Ramsey-Moore are expected to attend the Pan and Powder event, which is being held for the first time in San Fernando. J’Ouvert will kick off at 4 am while Pan and Powder will commence at 6 pm. Both events are being sponsored by Carib and Angostura.
The mayor said he did not anticipate any issues with the public and the business community regarding traffic restrictions.
Lewis said, “All restrictions have been put in place and have been guided by the TTPS. They have gone through the route on more than one occasion, and they are the ones who would have provided the advice in terms of what street we close off and what access would be gained.”
The mayor said they were also twinning with Point Fortin Borough Corporation, and they have planned a fete match and curry duck competition.
Commenting on Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations, he said, “It’s a month of celebration that stimulates the microeconomy of that particular area in our country, and it gives the opportunity for promoters and small businesses to flourish during that time, and I think that any type of economic activity garnered from events like this is something that we can all benefit from.”
Some of the other events include the Military and Heroes Parade and the Civic Reception, where outstanding citizens will be awarded. The celebrations will culminate on December 7 with the Mayor’s Charity Ball.
