Three days after he disappeared while bathing with relatives at a beach in Toco, Coast Guard divers, fisherfolk, police, members of the search and rescue team and even villagers widened their search for nine-year-old Omari Providence yesterday.
Omari, who lived at Picton Road in Laventille, visited Mission Beach, Toco, with his family on Sunday afternoon and was swept away by waves.
Up to yesterday afternoon, the massive search effort to find the child continued at several points along Trinidad’s east coast.
Contacted for comment by telephone yesterday, one of Omari’s relatives said they had no further updates from his parents who remained in Toco to assist with search efforts.
Asked how the family felt, the relative said they were all doing their best to cope with the loss.
On Monday, Omari’s grandmother Kathleen Providence said she was still clinging to hope that he could still be alive and was praying for his safe return.
Since Omari’s disappearance, several groups including members of the Hunters Search and Rescue Unit and residents of nearby villages have been searching for him.
According to the search and rescue team, led by Vallance Rambharat, the search has been expanded.
In a post on its Facebook page, the group said the search for Omari has now stretched to Point Galera in the east to Lillette Beach in the west.
It added that the new search plan was developed in consultation with the fisherfolk community of Toco.
