SEWA TT hopes to collect at least 40,000 items of clothing to assist those in need. The charitable organisation began its two-day clothes drive on Saturday at the NCIC Nagar in Chaguanas.
Revan Teelucksingh, the head of SEWA TT, said this marks the fifth year the organisation has held the event. He mentioned the clothing will go to individuals and families in need. To ensure this, SEWA TT has partnered with elected officials and the Ministry of Social Development to identify the families who will receive the clothing.
Teelucksingh noted although the clothes drive lasts for two days, a team of 500 volunteers will work daily to sort and package the clothing for distribution in December. He emphasised nothing goes to waste. Some items unsuitable for wearing are shredded into rags or stripped of buttons, zippers, and other fasteners for reuse.
Teelucksingh added depending on the volume of clothing received, SEWA TT may decide to extend the drive by another day.
