A soldier was among three people arrested during anti-crime operations in the northern policing division and in Tobago on Monday.
Three firearms—including a loaded submachine gun—and several rounds of ammunition also were seized during the exercise.
The Police Service reports that between 6:45 pm on Monday (July 7, 2025) and 3 am today, Tuesday (July 8, 2025), an intelligence-led operation was conducted in the Arima district.
According to the TTPS, during the exercise, officers from the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) intercepted two vehicles—a Nissan Wingroad and Nissan Tiida—while at Tumpuna Road.
When the vehicles were searched, the officers discovered a submachine gun which was loaded with a magazine containing 22 rounds of ammunition and a pistol loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition.
Three male suspects, ages 25 to 27 years—including a 26-year-old soldier—were arrested in connection with the weaponry seized.
The TTPS statement says officers suspected that the trio was on their way to commit a firearm-related offence when they were arrested.
The exercise was spearheaded by ACP Collis Hazel, Snr. Supt. Montrichard and Snr. Supt. Spence.
Meanwhile, GEB and IATF officers on an anti-crime exercise in Tobago found and seized one firearm.
That exercise was carried out between 11 am and 1 pm on Monday.
The TTPS says investigations are ongoing into these above matters.
