Students of St George’s College began classes at the University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT) Valsayn Campus on Monday, where they have been temporarily relocated, following the collapse of the ceiling at the school building in Barataria.
Parents were however notified of the unavailability of a shuttle service only hours before on Sunday but were given the assurance that shuttle services will be made available from today (Tuesday).
The parents were notified via email on Sunday by school principal Asha Ramraj-Sookdeo.
The email read: "I have just been advised by the Ministry of Education that all students of St George’s College are required to attend school at the UTT Valsayn Campus tomorrow Monday 31st October, 2022. However please note that the shuttle services will only be available from Tuesday November 1st 2022.
While we are differing from the initial plan that I had discussed with you in our meeting last Friday 28th October 2022, we must comply with the ministry's directive."
It is expected that extensive repairs will begin at the school’s building in Barataria soon.
Physical classes at St George’s were suspended early last month after the school’s ceiling collapsed as a result of heavy rain.
No one was injured during the incident but as a precaution classes were conducted online.
Following this, the Chief Education Officer informed principal Ramraj-Sookdeo that plans have been put in place to have the school relocated to the UTT campus.
Efforts to reach both the principal and Education Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly for comment proved futile up to press time yesterday.
