Tableland man sentenced 8 months hard labour for possession of ammunition

Leslie Dun­can, 38, of Lo­cal Road, Table­land, ap­peared vir­tu­al­ly be­fore Mag­is­trate Mar­garet Alert at the Princes Town Mag­is­trates’ Court to­day charged with pos­ses­sion of am­mu­ni­tion. He was sen­tenced to eight months’ hard labour.

Dun­can was charged fol­low­ing an an­ti-crime ex­er­cise con­duct­ed by mem­bers of the South­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force (SDTF). Ac­cord­ing to po­lice re­ports, around 11 am on Ju­ly 3rd, went to Lo­cal Road, Table­land. While there, PC Ed­wards ob­served a man look­ing in the di­rec­tion of the po­lice ve­hi­cle and hold­ing his pock­et. The man start­ed run­ning in the op­po­site di­rec­tion, which led to a chase. He was caught by of­fi­cers a short dis­tance away.

He was searched, and sev­en nine mil­lime­tre rounds of am­mu­ni­tion wrapped in a green rag was found in the man’s pock­et. He was then cau­tioned, ar­rest­ed and tak­en to the Mara­bel­la Po­lice Sta­tion. PC Ed­wards sub­se­quent­ly charged him for the of­fence. The ex­er­cise was co­or­di­nat­ed by Snr Supt Lu­cia Win­ches­ter, Supt Carthy, Asp Ram­dass and In­sp Phillip and su­per­vised by Sgt Joseph, Sgt Charles and Cpl Charles
