Miss St Joseph-Tanika Durity, 24, and Yya Jane Ramey-Miss Five Rivers, 21, were named top model and best talent delegates respectively in the Miss World segment competition.

Both delegates emerged in the top three of the competition at the San Fernando Naparima Bowl on Sunday.

Durity, who works as an event and entertainment planner, wowed the judges during the Talent and Top Model segment but managed to stand out in the latter to earn her top points and a better chance at grabbing the Miss World title.

Ramey, who holds a BA in social work and social policies, also charmed the judges during the talent segment as she played the saxophone and performed a contemporary danced. Her points can also benefit her in the finals of the competition.

The two young women will go forward into the local leg of the Miss World competition on June 16 with point accrued from this phase of the pageant.

The ten aspiring young women showcased clothing from three Southern designers; Chara Lochan Dass (CLD), DADL by Deron Attzs Design Label and Daronte followed by their talent of choice.

Elite Planners Limited who runs the Miss World competition locally is spearheaded by Dr Reiaz Mohammed and Brian Gopaul.

This is the 69th annual Miss World competition, where one of the local beauties will be chosen to represent Trinidad and Tobago on December 7 in Thailand.

Gopaul said the segment was just a way to give the people of south Trinidad an experience.

He said: “We mirror the events of Miss World. In the international competition, there is Top Model, talent, sport and fitness and multimedia segments. What we do is in keeping with the competition, but we had to separate it because on the night the show will run too long. It was a way to be able to enjoy high fashion in a very prestigious way. The top (winners of the category) will give them a higher score towards the finals on the night of the pageant,” Gopaul said.

Runners up in the model category were Laura-Lee Williams-Miss Chaguanas and Tya Jane Ramey-Miss Five Rivers.

In the talent segment, Ramey emerged winner while runners up were Durity and Shalini Soochit- Miss Carapichima.
