Tem­po­rary re­pairs have been com­plet­ed on a bro­ken cul­vert which caused part of the Solomon Ho­choy High­way in Freeport to sink on Thurs­day, trig­ger­ing a mas­sive traf­fic jam.

In an in­ter­view yes­ter­day, Works Min­is­ter Ro­han Sinanan said it is not the first time that un­der­ground in­fra­struc­ture col­lapsed. Say­ing it was not a sink-hole, as re­port­ed, Sinanan said the un­der­ground in­fra­struc­ture was old and it was not un­com­mon for this to oc­cur.

“It is sim­ply a failed cul­vert which we fixed. They have done some re­me­di­al work fol­low­ing which we will is­sue a ten­der for per­ma­nent re­pairs to be done.

This will be done with­in the next week or two and the per­ma­nent re­pairs will be done with­in a week­end,” Sinanan said.

He could not give a cost of the project but said the cylin­ders un­der the high­way have been there for some time and need­ed chang­ing.

On Thurs­day, some mo­torists went in­to a pan­ic when a hole ap­peared on the high­way near the Uni­com­er fac­to­ry ware­house in Freeport.

There were no ac­ci­dents as Min­istry of Works per­son­nel quick­ly cor­doned off the area and be­gan fix­ing it with­in hours.
