Tobago’s dengue cases have climbed to 36, with 18 new cases reported since August 2.
In an update by the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection Secretary, Dr Faith B Yisrael said the island has not had any dengue fatalities.
On July 7, a release from the Tobago House of Assembly stated that the island had recorded its first laboratory-confirmed case of dengue fever, following the wave of dengue cases that began in Trinidad in January 2024. The THA said then that the suspected case was flagged by relevant personnel at the Tobago Regional Health Authority (TRHA), a sample taken, sent for testing and confirmation received on July 5.
The THA Secretary of the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection has been encouraging residents in Tobago to take the situation seriously, “as one case can lead to one hundred.”
The division had said that the standard response for dengue cases will be carried out by the Public Health Services Department of the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection. It said the Vector Control Unit will conduct an inspection of the home of a positive case, as well as all residences within a 100-metre radius, to check for and remove any mosquito breeding sites. It said, additionally, indoor residual spraying at the residence of the case and all residences extending 100 metres outwards will be carried out.
In total, T&T has reported 825 dengue cases and eight deaths.
