PRO of the Tobago Council of the PNM Kwesi Des Vignes said although Tobago has recorded nine murders for 2019, the island has seen an increase in the detection of crime on the island.
Speaking at a news conference held on Friday morning Des Vignes said, residents, had a responsibility to support the police and report crimes
“We had an unfortunate incident this morning (referring to the murder of security officer Mark Nurse) but in general what we are seeing is the detection rate of the Tobago Division of the Police Service increase by five per cent over last year and that only came because of the collaboration of the public.”
He also called for assistance in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
“So my call right now is that anyone here in Tobago who has any information that they wish to share with the police that would lead to the arrest and the persons responsible for the heinous crimes this morning to be brought to justice. Please come forward, please go to the police, call 800-TIPS if you have to,” he said.
On Friday morning, security officer Mark Nurse was shot dead near Penny Saver’s grocery. Another security officer was also shot but remains in hospital.
Up to Friday afternoon, no one was held in connection with Nurse’s murder, however, officers from the Tobago Homicide Bureau were pursuing certain leads.
Investigations are continuing.
