Traffic was backed up for miles throughout Chaguanas on Thursday, when the Perseverance Road River Bridge was closed to traffic, to facilitate repairs to a height restriction barrier that was damaged on Wednesday when a truck ran into it.
Guardian Media understands that earlier on Thursday (October 17, 2024), traffic wardens were allowing a limited flow of vehicles on the bridge to ease the morning congestion.
Mayor of Chaguanas, Faaiq Mohammed, said three vehicles had collided with the bridge in the last month. Mayor Mohammed suggested that the authorities place additional warning signs on the roadway leading up to the bridge and remove the speed bumps there currently.
The Chaguanas Mayor said the speed bumps were placed directly below the height barrier and it is possible this may be causing vehicles to collide with the barrier as they crossed the bridge.
