Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Honourable Stuart R. Young MP and Mrs. Penelope Bradshaw-Niles, Permanent Secretary (A.g) of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries met today with a team from the Surinamese Delegation visiting Trinidad and Tobago.
The Surinamese Delegation gave Trinidad and Tobago an update on their developing energy sector, including new oil and gas finds, with some focus on renewable energy. His Excellency Mr. Albert R. Ramdin also acknowledged Suriname’s intention to reengage with Trinidad and Tobago not only on a political level, but on other more sustainable levels as well. The Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Honourable Stuart R. Young MP and Mrs. Penelope Bradshaw-Niles, Permanent Secretary (A.g) of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries met this morning (Thursday 18th November 2021) with a team from the Surinamese Delegation visiting Trinidad and Tobago. The team included His Excellency Mr. Albert R. Ramdin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation; His Excellency Mr. David Abiamofo, Minister of Natural Resources; Mr. Annand K.E. Jagesar, Managing Director, State Oil Company Staatsolie and Ms. Chanel V. Nahar Head of the Americas Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation.
Among other items, the visit sought to update Trinidad and Tobago on the status of Suriname’s developing energy sector including new oil and gas finds, with some focus on renewable energy. Opening the meeting, His Excellency Mr. Albert R. Ramdin acknowledged Suriname’s intention to reengage with Trinidad and Tobago not only on a political level but on other more sustainable levels as well. Suriname is at the beginning of their exploration into the energy industry and is seeking to collaborate and strengthen existing relationships so as to ensure sustainable future growth.
Both parties acknowledged the opportunities to partner, invest and learn from each other for the benefit of the citizens of both countries and underscored the importance of the transition to cleaner energy in order to remain competitive within the global market especially after the recent COP26 Conference.
As a mature province, Trinidad and Tobago has valuable experience with the many global players in the global energy industry. Minister young stated that “the door is open to Suriname as the country has been an excellent partner and friend to Trinidad and Tobago” and there is the potential to explore the possibility for joint ventures between the two countries.
The delegation has met also with others during their trip including National Energy, the Ministry of Trade and Industries and the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs.
