While it has caused a stir on social media, a video clip of soldier and radio personality Nigel Joseph alias Tommy Shmurda is at least three years old, according to a Defence Force source.
The video, which surfaced on a social media news account earlier this week, was believed to be extracted from another video that was streamed live on one of his social media accounts.
In the video, Joseph was wearing his Regiment uniform and appeared to be encouraging young women to give him sexual favours in exchange for success.
“You don’t have to go to school and sit down in the class and listen to lecture and do group project.
“Give me your front and you will be successful, so yes they lie down for Tommy.”
The video prompted a letter from one woman who urged Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, Defence Minister Wayne Sturge and Chief of Defence Staff Air Vice Marshall Darryl Daniel to address the matter.
In the letter, the woman urged that the matter be addressed with urgency, noting that it was unbecoming of a serving soldier.
“Such conduct has no place within our Defence Force, an institution that should embody integrity, respect and responsibility.”
In several social media stories, Joseph said the video clips did not fairly reflect the entire remarks and were clipped to stir controversy.
He also replied to the original post on Instagram defending the comments.
“People who wasn’t on my live coming to comment not knowing why I said this smh (shaking my head.)
“Out of all the positivity I now preach, what, what alyuh post.”
A Defence Force source, who asked not to be named, told Guardian Media that a preliminary investigation was conducted and the video was one of several videos that arose because of an altercation between Joseph and two women.
The source also noted that someone got access to one of Joseph’s social media accounts where they “altered and reposted” several videos from a fake account.
“No video was posted on any of the social media handles of the solder,” the source disclosed.
Guardian Media attempted to contact Alexander and Sturge on the matter yesterday but were unsuccessful.
