An 18-year-old Venezuelan is recovering at the Scarborough General Hospital after he was stabbed during a fight at the Store Bay Beach Facility yesterday, in an incident that also led to the arrest of another Venezuelan man who gave police a fake name.
Police said Daniel Ortiz of Shirvan Road was liming with a group of Venezuelans around 9.45 a.m. when they argued with a man they had paid to buy drinks. When they refused to give him extra cash for transport, the dispute escalated and several others joined in.
The Venezuelans ran but were chased.
Ortiz was caught near Ben’s Bar on Store Bay Local Road, where he was beaten and stabbed.
He suffered a punctured lung and multiple stab wounds to his back.
He was taken to hospital, where he remains warded in the surgical ward.
Police said during the confrontation, another Venezuelan national, identified as Roger Alexander, pulled a gun and fired two shots.
Crown Point officers, Task Force members and senior officers, including ACP Subero and Snr Supt Earl Elie, responded.
They later found Alexander at the Store Bay Beach Facility and recovered a Glock pistol hidden in his underwear.
He was arrested and taken to the Crown Point Police Station.
Police said Alexander gave a false name, which created confusion on social media because it was the same as the Homeland Security Minister.
The Ministry later issued a release confirming the suspect is not the Minister and criticised the media for misleading the public.
The Criminal Investigations Department is continuing enquiries.
