A Chaguanas woman was granted bail with surety when she appeared before a Master of the High Court charged with possession of prohibited articles and trafficking in marijuana at the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre.
Sasha Melony was charged with the offences when she appeared before Master Sookraj Gosami in the Criminal Court North, on Tuesday 3 December 2024.
She was granted bail with surety in the sum of $100,000 and ordered to report to the Chaguanas Police Station once per month.
The matter was transferred to the Arima District Court and adjourned to January 7, 2025.
Reports are that on November 27, 2024, prison officials at the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre discovered that a quantity of marijuana and cigarettes allegedly were smuggled into the facility during a prisoner visit.
Officers of the Northern Division North Gang Unit were contacted, and three persons were arrested in connection with the matter.
Their investigations led police officers to the Chaguanas home of one of the suspects. There, they discovered several drones, a quantity of drone accessories and drone batteries, which enabled the devices to carry payloads.
Melony was subsequently charged with the offences by PC Paul.
The other two suspects were released pending further investigations.
Meanwhile, in the North-Eastern Division, officers of the Gang and Intelligence Unit conducted an exercise yesterday (December 3, 2024), between 1:30 pm and 3 pm, during which they proceeded to the Santa Cruz district.
There, they observed a group of men sitting along Mc Carthy Street.
One of the men was stopped and searched. The officers discovered that he had in his possession one Glock pistol loaded with a magazine containing 15 rounds of ammunition, as well a second magazine containing 23 rounds of ammunition.
The 24-year-old suspect, who is from San Juan, was arrested in connection with the find.
Investigations are ongoing.
