Seon Adhar and Amy Rajkumar added bronze medals for Trinidad and Tobago when the GAMMA Pan-American Championships continued in Bogotá, Colombia, on Friday (September 11).
Competing in the men’s 52.2 kg semifinal, Adhar was beaten by Colombian Thomas Amaya, while Rajkumar was stopped in her women's 56.7 kg semifinal by Nicaraguan Dayanna Rodriguez.
With the two bronze medals, T&T carried its overall haul to 12 (one gold, four silver and seven bronze) for the fourth spot on the medal table.
Mexico leads with 22 medals (ten gold, six silver and six bronze), followed by host Colombia with 26 (six gold, six silver, and 14), and USA with four, two gold medals and two bronze medals.
Renee Fortune won the lone gold medal for T&T in the Under-18 Girls’ 72.6 kg, defeating Colombian Daniela Leal in the final.
Among the silver medallists for T&T were Denahi Gustav, Kai-el Grant, Jazz Julien, and Jonathan Bunbury. Gustav was the first to secure a medal for T&T, a silver, when he was defeated by Mexico’s Cain Kalel Nango Jimenez in the Under-14 Boys’ 54 kg fight; Grant followed in the Under-12 Boys’ 34 kg category with a silver medal as well, after he was beaten by another Mexican, Luis Esteban Romero, in their title match; Julien was beaten by USA’s Talon Worden in the U-16 Boys 75 kg final, and Bunbury ended with the silver after losing the U-18 Boys’ 52.2 kg final to Colombian Jose Luis Melo, who had earlier defeated T&T’s Eli Jackie in the semifinals.
Other medals for T&T included bronze for Elijah Cudjoe, Chedon Grant, Sonia Baboolal and Mirza Griffith.
In the U-12 Boys’ 38 kg semifinal, Cudjoe was defeated in his match-up with Puerto Rico’s Wigeberto Velez 0-1, while Grant was stopped in his U-16 Boys’ 68 kg semifinal by Mexico’s Erick Leon Estevez Valdivia, and Baboolal fell to Mexico’s Marietta Quirasco 0-3 in their U-16 Girls’ 50 kg semifinal.
In the 56.7 kg class, Griffith was ousted by Puerto Rico’s Angel Sanchez in the semifinals, along with Colombian Santiago Segura, who was defeated by Mexico’s Leonardo Sanchez.
